Artist Statement

I have been making collages since 2020. During that time I have taken more than 15 workshops and each year I also participate in ongoing studio classes. My work has been exhibited in a number of group shows in and around Woodstock, New York, and in Sarasota, Florida. I have also had two solo shows.

I love making collages because it allows me to use papers that would otherwise be thrown out, like the inside of tea boxes, the covers of a Kleenex box, and even some wrappings on toilet paper. Being engaged in the process of making collages leads me to look at my surroundings and the environment differently – anything can be source material.

In addition to available sources of paper – including magazines, newspapers, old art books – I find making my own resource papers the most satisfying. I have learned to make paper from plant pulp, stomping on the pulp in water and then incorporating inclusions, such as leaves and twigs. I also paint own resource papers and embellish them using stencils, stamps, and markers.

I love the process of discovery that happens when I put one piece of paper next to another, and have the materials speak to me, leading me to choose the next piece of paper to incorporate as the piece evolves.

Making collage art is a lot of fun most of the time.

Biography

I have been studying and making collages since 2020. Before that, my artistic pursuit was jewelry-fabrication. For 18 years, I worked and studied in a studio in San Miguel, Mexico, every weekday three months a year. My husband’s health issues made it difficult for us to stay in San Miguel in the winters, so we moved our winter base to Sarasota, Florida, for the medical care, weather, and great cultural opportunities.

I decided to study collage-making, partly because of it’s forgiving nature and focus on colors and shapes and their inter-relationships. I have taken workshops at the Women’s Studio Workshop (Rosendale, New York),  Snow Farm (Northampton, MA), with Lynne Perella (Interlaken, NY), Jill Krasner (Sarasota, FL), Liz Cole (Sarasota, FL), and David Hornung, James Ransome, Robert Ohnigian, and Jenne Currie the Woodstock School of Art (Woodstock, NY).

I continue to take a studio class with Jenne Currie weekly while in Woodstock, NY.

My work has been shown at local galleries, including Pinkwater Gallery, Woodstock School of Art, and WAAM in the Hudson Valley, and at the Sarasota Art Center and Women’s Contemporary Art exhibits in Florida. I have also had two solo shows.

I am currently co-chair at the Pelican Cove Art Club where I live for 5 months a year. My responsibilities include managing a large group show and 3 solo shows every season, securing speakers on art-related topics for monthly meetings, overseeing art classes, and developing new initiatives.
